It’s time to reassess rats

It’s high time we forgive the rat his past ills and protect him if he is black and tolerate him if he is brown. And I do tolerate them, in fact I offer them safe refuge in our roof space and food in the garden. It strikes me as no different from feeding squirrels, both animals are rodents, of a similar size and eat pretty similar things. The poor rat is simply burdened with an out of date reputation and I’ve never been a sucker for poor propaganda.

It’s also very easy to prevent any in-house visits which obviously wouldn’t be tolerable, and if they chew through the Telly aerial cables – so what? I don’t want to be a Millionaire or give a damn what unpleasantness is abroad in Albert Square. Rats play an important role in our community – that’s why they’re there in the first place. Prejudice is fuelled by ignorance and intolerance and neither should be acceptable to a rational person. If you can’t accept them as interesting or valuable then at least turn a blind eye, and after all if you can’t outwit a rodent without killing it – you’re in trouble. ????
