When Israel is wagging a government’s tail, this is the type of illogical rubbish spewed by their MP’s.
To get a taste of Jess Phillips, take a look at these two examples. Spot the absurdity in the first one and the betrayal of an already vulnerable group in the second.
Comments on the Corbyn Leadership and Party Divisions
- “Knife in the Front” Comment:Â In 2016, during a period of intense internal conflict, she said she “wouldn’t knife [Jeremy Corbyn] in the back,” implying she would do it “in the front.” While intended as a blunt metaphor for open political challenge, it was widely condemned by Corbyn supporters as disrespectful and aggressive.
- Threats to Resign:Â She repeatedly stated she would resign from the Labour Party if Corbyn became Prime Minister, arguing his leadership made the party unelectable. This was seen by some as disloyal and contributing to public division within the party.
Stance on Transgender Issues
Phillips has faced significant criticism from LGBTQ+ activists and some within her own party for her positions and votes on transgender rights.
- Opposition to Self-ID:Â She was a vocal opponent of the Labour leadership’s policy (under Corbyn) to introduce self-identification for transgender people, arguing it could impact the collection of data and the provision of single-sex spaces for women. This aligned her with groups like “Women’s Place UK,” which some critics label as “trans-exclusionary.”
- LGBT+ Action Plan Vote:Â In 2021, she was one of a handful of Labour MPs who abstained on a vote for the Government’s LGBT+ Action Plan, specifically due to its support for reforming the Gender Recognition Act to include self-identification. This was seen as a betrayal by many LGBTQ+ supporters.
It is difficult to ascertain whether Phillips has any principles or whether she goes with the prevailing wind to stay in her seat.
