Junction Improvement Works in Wyke Regis to Start Next Month

Work to improve pedestrian safety at a key junction in Wyke Regis will start next month.

Starting from 13 April, these works will see improvements made to the junction of Portland Road with Merley Road and Langton Avenue.

There will be a new pedestrian crossing point installed, footpaths widened and new traffic signals installed.

During the works there will be temporary traffic lights installed that will enable two-way traffic to continue on the main Portland Road – keeping disruption to a minimum.

Cllr Jon Andrews, Cabinet member for Place services, said: “We are doing these works as they will make the area far safer for pedestrians to cross.

“As well as installing controlled crossing points, the new modern signal equipment will also improve the efficiency of the junction for drivers.

“We appreciate these works come relatively soon after the end of the Ferrybridge works but the traffic management has been designed to keep disruption to a minimum.

“We thank residents and drivers in the area for their patience while we carry out these works.”

The works will:

  • Provide a pedestrian crossing points on Merley Road, on Langton Avenue and on the northern arm of Portland Road
  • Widen the footway on the corner of Portland Road (north) and Langton Avenue
  • Extend parking restrictions on Merley Road and on Portland Road southbound lane to provide clear visibility for the junction
  • All existing vehicle movements will be maintained

During the works, which are expected to be completed by 5 June, traffic through the junction will be controlled with temporary signals.

These temporary signals will keep two-way flow of traffic on Portland Road and control traffic on Langton Avenue.

Merley Road will be closed between Portland Road and Stoke Road for the duration of the works and to help minimise disruption to the flow of traffic on Portland Road.

Access to properties will be maintained but will need to be via Stoke Road, Doncaster Road or Derwent Road.
