Talking Migration at The Justice Café

The Justice Café talk in The Shire Hall this October focuses on the issues around migrant workers in the UK and explores the facts behind the headlines.

Nigel Costley, SWTUC Regional Secretary, and Sarah Short from the South West Strategic Migration Partnership will discuss the reality and the myths concerning immigration and population – hotly debated issues that affect how people are treated at work and in their local community.

People take for granted our freedom to travel. Migration brings economic benefits and the richness of diversity, but it can unsettle people. People least likely to meet a migrant are most likely to believe the daily diet of scare stories.

Nigel Costley said: “There is not a day when migration is not in the news. It is a subject that raises strong emotions and sometimes more heat than light. It is a topic where public perceptions are often very different from the facts. The session will consider what the movement of people means for the South West: good or bad.”

There is a need to address the concerns and fears with facts and the problems with solutions.

Nigel and Sarah aim to put forward these facts and open a debate at the Justice Cafe on the one of the burning issues of the day.

The event takes place on Thursday 15th October and tickets are £5 and available in advance from Dorchester Arts or on the door. The talk starts at 7.30pm (doors 7:00pm).
