Join Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and BSO Leverhulme Young Conductor in Association Victor Aviat for a spectacular evening of the most popular classical music as the annual Last Night of the BSO Proms returns to Weymouth Pavilion on Thursday 2 August. There will be music to tap along to, music to move you and of course the traditional selection of Proms favourites. Bring your flags and join us for a great summer night out with fantastic live music performed by the full forces of the BSO!

The first half of the concert will feature some of the best classical music ever written, with something for everyone to enjoy. The programme includes Mendelssohn’s Fingal’s Cave, Gluck’s Dance of the Blessed Spirits, Beethoven’s Shepherd’s Song from Symphony No.6 and Bizet’s Intermezzofrom his ever popular opera Carmen. The first half of the Last Night of the BSO Proms will close with the andante cantabile from Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No.5. The andante cantabile is the second movement in this piece. The initial reaction to Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No.5 was muted at best, however, after his death the work grew in popularity and it is now one of his most loved and famous pieces.

After the interval, the BSO will perform a celebration of everything British with popular Proms classics including Elgar’s Pomp & Circumstance March No.1, Sir Hubert Parry’s Jerusalem and of course Sir Henry Wood’sFantasia on British Sea Songs, a medley of sea songs concluding with the patriotic Rule, Britannia!, which has become a firm Proms tradition. There will also be some familiar pieces from popular British composers, including Holst’s A Somerset Rhapsody and Elgar’s Chanson de Matin. The BSO will also perform Holst’s iconic Jupiter from the Planets, the swelling brass and slow waltzing strings in this piece are met with moments of poignant beauty in the magnificent tune now best known as I Vow to Thee My Country.

The Last Night of the BSO Proms will be the final concert Victor Aviat conducts in Weymouth as the BSO Leverhulme Young Conductor in Association. During his time with the BSO Victor has enjoyed conducting a variety of concerts at Weymouth Pavilion including the BSO’s New Year Johann Strauss Gala, ‘Vienna Calling’ featuring acclaimed violinist Chloë Hanslip and, of course, the Last Night of the BSO Proms.

The BSO will be returning to Weymouth on Thursday 20 September for its Autumn Classics concert. The Orchestra will be conducted by the BSO’s new Leverhulme Young Conductor in Association Marta Gardolińska, and will perform some of the best-loved music in the orchestral repertoire, including works by Brahms, Mendelssohn and Dvořák. The BSO will also be returning to Weymouth for its extremely popular annual New Year Johann Strauss Gala. On Saturday 12 January, Viennese conductor Thomas Rösner will once again conduct the BSO in a celebration of all your favourite Johann Strauss polkas and marches.
