Letter to Oliver Letwin: Let’s have An Inclusive Cross Party Government Please

Dear Dr Letwin,

I was a remain voter last week but recognise that we have to now move on and make the best of ,what is on the face of it, an awful situation. As you put together your team I wonder whether you have thought of including those from across the political spectrum to ensure that there can be consensus to take forward almost like a “war” Government of national unity to heal divisions. I hope that you will include experts on all areas again from different positions to again reach a consensus. We need to restore faith in experts and politicians and this could be a mechanism to help this process on, for example the legal issues were ignored in the campaign but are vitally important to get right.

Please look at the bigger picture recognising both that there are many in this country who did not vote to leave and hear their voices, but also recognise that there are communities that feel left behind and trapped and that somehow they need to be brought back into the mainstream of political discourse and hope given back to their communities. The obscene difference between the richest and poorest and us in the middle cannot continue without fracturing society and a renewed sense that society is important and that collectively we can work this all out would seem vital now.

Dr Debbie Legge
