Liberal Democrats take control of Dorset Council

Dorset residents went to the polls on 2 May to elect 82 representatives to Dorset Council.  Local town and parish council, and Dorset Police and Crime Commissioner elections were also held on the same day. 

Votes for Dorset Council were counted on Friday 3 May at Redlands Community Sports Hub, Weymouth. Votes for the town and parish councils and the Police and Crime Commissioner will be counted and announced on Saturday 4 May.

The overall turn-out was 33.25%

The Liberal Democrats took the majority of the votes, with 42 elected councillors and now have control of Dorset Council. 

What’s the make up of the new council?

There will be 82 councillors representing four political parties and in addition, there are 4  independent councillors on Dorset Council. The numbers are as follows:

42 Liberal Democrats

30 Conservatives

2 Labour

4 Greens

4 Independent for Dorset/Independent other

Out of the 82 seats up for grabs, 28 are new councillors. 54 seats have been retained by members who have previously served as councillors for Dorset Council.
