Luxurycare Group has announced free training for those who want to support people with dementia and be part of Dorset’s first ‘Alzheimer’s Café’ in Poole.

Named ‘Alzheimer’s Café: Poole’ the specialist café and community project will be part of the Alzheimer Café UK charity, which offers spaces for people with dementia and their families to gather for the purpose of education, discussions and socialising opportunities. Located at Birds Hill Nursing Home, Birds Hill Road, Poole, the ‘café’ will be the first of its kind in Dorset and the eighteenth setup in the UK.

Coordinated by Luxurycare Group, which runs four care homes across Bournemouth and Poole, the company will be offering free training on the 17th of June for people who wish to take part in the community project and support those with dementia. Training will be delivered dementia care consultant Dr Gemma Jones who is a Trustee of Alzheimer Café UK and has contributed to over 40 publications related to dementia.

Luxurycare Group hopes the announcement of the café will raise awareness of Alzheimer’s and get people talking about dementia locally.

Alzheimer’s Café: Poole which is projected to open in September 2019 will be managed by trained Luxurycare Group professionals with assistance from volunteers interested in supporting those with dementia.

At the free training course, volunteers can expect to learn about the effects of dementia, how to build positive relationships with people suffering from dementia, how to respond to distressed behaviour and gain an understanding on how dementia can impact the way a person interacts with certain spaces and activities.

Mandy Kittlety, Managing Director of Luxurycare Group, said:

“The Alzheimer Café is a great opportunity for those interested in helping people with dementia to get involved and increase the support available regionally. We hope to see lots of volunteers at the free training session!”

“This really is one of the most exciting things Luxurycare has been involved in creating and we are very proud to be holding the first monthly Alzheimer Café in Dorset.

Dr Gemma Jones said:

“It’s a pleasure to be working with Luxurycare to set up the UK’s next Alzheimer Cafe. This is the first one in Dorset, so I’m very excited to see the effect it will have on the local community. The Alzheimer Café will feel like a normal cafe – you can come and go as you please, but you’ll be in the company of the cafe leaders, caregiving professionals and volunteers.”

Training courses will be delivered by Dr Gemma Jones to volunteers and café leaders on the 17th of June at Regency Manor Care Home, Blair Avenue, Poole, BH14 0DA. If you are interested in volunteering at the Alzheimer Cafe, contact Mandy Kittlety by emailing [email protected]
