Firefighters were called to a significant blaze on South Street, Dorchester, at 3:34 am this morning (9 December). The fire involved a mid-terrace commercial property (The Gorge Cafe) and required a large-scale emergency response.

Crews from across the region, including teams from Dorchester, Weymouth (two crews), Bridport (two crews), Portland, Wareham, Beaminster, Blandford, Charmouth, and Poole, were dispatched to the scene. Specialist resources were also deployed, including an aerial ladder platform from Yeovil, a support appliance from Hamworthy, and water carriers from Bridport and Yeovil, totalling approximately 50 firefighters.

The building has partially collapsed, and the fire has spread to adjacent properties through the roof spaces. Significant smoke is affecting the surrounding area, prompting safety measures for nearby residents. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported. However, several residents have been relocated to a safe location as a precaution.

South Street and parts of Trinity Street are currently closed to allow firefighting operations to continue safely.

The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time. Authorities have confirmed that a full investigation will commence once the site is deemed safe to access.

Local residents are advised to avoid the area and keep windows and doors closed if affected by the smoke. Emergency services remain on-site, working tirelessly to bring the situation under control.

Further updates will be provided as the situation develops.
