Detectives have charged a man in connection with an investigation into a report of rape in Poole.

It was reported that some time between 4.45am and 6am on Sunday 5 September 2021 the victim – a woman aged in her 30s – was approached by an unknown man riding a bicycle in the Westbourne area of Bournemouth.

The man travelled with the victim to the vicinity of Poole Road in Branksome, where the reported offence took place.

Following enquiries led by Dorset Police’s Major Crime Investigation Team (MCIT), a 29-year-old man from Poole has been charged with rape and is due to appear before Poole Magistrates’ Court on Saturday 11 September 2021.

Detective Inspector Simon Huxter, of MCIT, said: “Following a detailed investigation, we have consulted with the Crown Prosecution Service, which authorised the charge.

“This matter is now subject to a court process and as is typical in these circumstances, it would be entirely inappropriate for Dorset Police to comment further. It is important that the justice system is allowed to follow its course.

“I would like to remind the public that this matter is now the subject of active court proceedings and it is important to stress that there should be no commentary or sharing of information online or on social media that could potentially prejudice these proceedings.

“Dorset Police will continue to support the victim through the judicial process that will now follow and I’d like to pay tribute to the public for their support following appeals, which has assisted the investigation.”
