Man Sent to Prison Following Non-Fatal Strangulation in Dorchester

A man who violently abused a woman has been jailed thanks to the courage shown by his victim.

Officers launched an investigation following a report that Junior Turaga, aged 21 and of no fixed abode, had placed his hands around the neck of a woman who was known to him at an address in Dorchester on Monday, 14 October 2024, and tightened his grip until she struggled to breathe.

The woman also disclosed a history of controlling behaviour displayed by the defendant, including checking her mobile phone to see who she had been contacting as well as making threats to harm himself, her family or her car if she did not do as he wished.

Following enquiries by officers, Turaga was arrested and charged and on Tuesday, 3 February 2026, at Bournemouth Crown Court, he admitted to offences of non-fatal strangulation and controlling and coercive behaviour.

He was sentenced to three years in prison and a restraining order was put in place for seven years, preventing him from making contact with his victim.

Police Constable Harry Chaplin, of Weymouth police, said: “Thanks to the bravery shown by the victim in this case, we have been able to hold Junior Turaga to account for the violent and abusive behaviour he displayed towards her.

“I hope the courage she has shown sends a message to victims of domestic abuse that they will be supported and we will do all we can to ensure perpetrators face justice.”
