Dorset Wildlife Trust (DWT) is holding a sand sculpture competition on Weymouth Beach and is inviting families to create life size marine giants from sand.
The event, which will take place on Sunday 21st September from 11am – 3pm, will give budding sand sculptors a chance to learn about our marine giants, whilst getting advice and expertise from the famous local sand sculptor and competition judge, Mark Anderson, from Sandworld in Weymouth.
Melissa Spiers from the DWT Fine Foundation Chesil Beach Centre, said: “We are very lucky to have such magnificent and gigantic wildlife here in British waters. Many people may have seen Barrel Jellyfish this summer, and in the last few weeks, dolphins have been spotted along Dorset’s coast. This is a chance to appreciate just how big our sharks, dolphins, jellyfish and whales really are, learn about them and get creative outdoors.”
Families taking part in the competition will have marine experts on hand to tell them all about the Blue whale – the biggest animal in the world, why marine giants can get so big, and the basking shark, which is the second largest shark in the world, growing up to 10 metres in length!
Prizes up for grabs include two family passes to Sandworld, a snorkel set from 109 Watersports, and a limited edition interactive DVD of British Sea life from Underwater Explorers.
Teams can enter for £3, and meet DWT staff at 11am by the Clock on the esplanade in Weymouth on Sunday 21st September, weather permitting. Prizes will be awarded at 3pm. Please bring your own bucket and spade.
