Dorset Wildlife Trust (DWT) is celebrating National Marine Week beside the seaside this summer with the free family fun day, Wild About Hengistbury road show on Saturday 25th July from 10.30am – 3.30pm.

We have lined-up wildlife activities* for all ages, including some close encounters with owls, flying cockroaches, pond dipping activities, bird watching, wildlife gardening, moths, and wildlife face painting.  The event is run with Bournemouth Borough Council and our partners in the Great Heath project.

DWT’s Great Heath Learning and Interpretation Officer, Nicky Hoar, said “Hengistbury Head is packed with wildness on all sides to it’s a perfect place for our wildest ‘wild about’ event yet.  This is a chance for people of all ages to have fun discovering the amazing wildlife around us.  Come and get to know your next door nature!”

There will also be wildlife gardening advice, workshops and activities, and the opportunity to receive a FREE wildlife friendly gardening plaque on the spot!  All you need to do is show us pictures of five or more wildlife friendly features in your garden and you will be presented with your plaque to proudly display in your garden.  Visit www.dorsetwildlifetrust.org.uk/wildlife-friendly-gardens-scheme to view the criteria.

DWT will also be showing off the new ‘wildlife van’ which can be seen at various events around the county throughout the summer.  The ‘Hi Teck Wild Trek trailer’ will also be there, with exciting close-up views of small creatures through microscopes linked to a computer to help you discover the mini-beasts on your doorstep.

For the early birds, there will be a bird ringing demonstration with Christchurch Harbour Ornithological Group at 8.30am at the Hengistbury Head Visitors Centre. (BH6 4EN)

The Wild About Hengistbury event will be located between the Hiker Café and the famous Double Dykes.  For more information visit www.dorsetwildlifetrust.org.uk/wah or phone the Great Heath Living Landscape team on 01202 692033.
