Members of a local Poole group, ‘Men’s Sheds’ have donated their time and skills to Dorset Wildlife Trust (DWT) by building over 50 bird boxes for children to use at DWT events.
The group, which has only just been established, spend their time working on projects from restoring bicycles and furniture, to any odd jobs for members of the local community.
Secretary of Men’s Sheds in Poole, Alan Hawkins, said, “We were all very keen to volunteer to make some bird boxes for The Great Heath Team at DWT. We enjoy doing that kind of work, and it was great to spend time together socially – we all get on very well. It’s also nice to think that our work can make a difference to important conservation work that Dorset Wildlife Trust does in Dorset.”
Great Heath Community Conservation Officer, Katie Wilkinson, said, “The Men’s Sheds group helped us massively, making over 50 bird box ‘kits’ for us, by cutting up wood to the right lengths and shapes, so we could take it to various events and children could easily make their own bird boxes. We’re really grateful to them for their help, and we hope they enjoyed it!”
Men’s Sheds in Poole aim to help with the community at large, whilst members of the group can benefit from social contact and take part in a variety of projects at their own pace in a safe, friendly and inclusive venue. Everyone is welcome, and the group meets every Wednesday from 10am – 12.30 pm at Limelights Youth Centre, Canford Heath (BH17 8PJ).
