Dear BBC
I wish to register a complaint and ask for an explanatory response.
Yesterday (24th August 2022), I was watching the information screen in the waiting room of my dentist. A BBC News Headline ‘ticker’ was running at the bottom of the screen with the day’s headlines. I was struck by one headline which read:
“Antisemitism Row: Corbyn Attends Left Wing Jewish Event”.
When I got home, I tried to find information online (including on the BCC’s own website) using the headline wording and various other related search terms. I found NOTHING other than a very similar BBC headline and articles from other sources relating to Corbyn’s attendance at such an event back in April 2018! Here is the BBC article from 3rd April 2018:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-43624231
I found NO articles (on the BBC website or anywhere else) that relates to his attendance at such an event recently (or anytime since 2018).
The wording of the BBC headline is also ‘dubious’ and ‘smeary’, but we’ll leave that aside for the purposes of this complaint.
I should mention that all the other headlines on the ticker related to news from yesterday, so this can’t have been a glitch that meant that only headlines from 2018 were shown.
Assuming that he has indeed not attended such an event recently, I’d like to ask why the BBC had this headline appearing on their ‘news ticker’ yesterday? Please treat this as a complaint over the matter.
I feel the BBC should issue a public explanation as to how this occurred and a public apology.
I await your reply.
