Cornwall Resists responds to ‘liar and fraudster’ who made false claims

Cornwall Resists has written the following statement to set the record straight over refugee hotel protest organiser Mylo Gregory’s claims about who runs Cornwall Resists.

Now, we all know that Mylo Gregory is a liar and fraudster who doesn’t care about facts. After all he called a whole protest based on making a racist assumption that a man with a foreign name who’d be charged with rape was a resident of the Beresford Hotel. He even spent a whole day shouting at us in caps on our socials that we “SUPPORTED RAPISTS” before changing his event description and pretending as though he’d never made these false accusations.

This was a dangerous assumption that threatened the refugees in the hotel.

He has now made a second dangerous assumption on social media – and it’s one we need to set the record straight on. Mylo has claimed that Robert Higgins is the leader of Cornwall Resists. He has probably made this claim because, quite frankly, he’s shit at research. As he rightly says, Cornwall Resists came out of Resist G7. But Rob had nothing to do with Resist G7. He was involved with Ocean Rebellion – a totally separate group that wasn’t linked to the coalition. However, due to the fact that Ocean Rebellion did high profile stunts at the G7 and he received a lot of unjustified police harassment, including a raid, his name is linked to the protests against the G7 generally. Mylo’s lazy research skills put two and two together and made five. And he couldn’t be more wrong.

However, given that being named by the far-right can have serious consequences, this isn’t a joke. And it means we need to set the record straight and say categorically that Rob had nothing to do with Resist G7 and has nothing to do with Cornwall Resists or Kernow Antifascist Network (KAFN). Anyone who cares to google his name can see that there is zero connection between him and Resist G7 or Cornwall Resists.

Resist G7 was a nationwide coalition led by local groups who wanted to leave a legacy of radical resistance as a result of our mobilisations against the G7 summit. We wanted to build a positive legacy from the shittery of having the G7 on our doorstep. Cornwall Resists is that legacy. It is a network of local groups that have come together to fight for a better Cornwall – and KAFN – who organised the bloc on our demo on Sunday is one of those groups.

Cornwall Resists is a non-hierarchical group. We don’t have leaders. We are made up of local people from local groups who want to see a diverse and welcoming Kernow that exists for the benefit of the people who live here and not as a playground for rich second home owners. We are proudly anti-fascist, anti-capitalist, feminist, pro trans liberation and pro Cornish independence.

Like our comrades from KAFN, we come from all over Cornwall and are of varying ages. And this may blow the minds of some of the far-right who are so deeply misogynistic that the idea of strong women doesn’t occur to them – but many of the people on the frontline of yesterday’s protest were women and trans people from Cornwall. We are not funded – other than our crowdfunder that you can still donate to if you want to support our work – we do not bus people in – although we welcome anyone who travels to our protests as there are no borders in anti-fascism. We live, work, and bring up our children here. And this is one of the reasons we hide our identities. We live in our communities. We work and volunteer in and for our communities. We are raising children in our communities. We care for vulnerable loved ones in our communities. We should not and will not put our loved ones at threat from far-right violence by revealing our identities.

But it’s because of this real threat that’s been levelled against someone that isn’t even involved in our movement that we are releasing this statement to set the record straight.
