National Empty Homes Week is being supported by West Dorset District Council and Weymouth & Portland Borough Council by encouraging owners of empty homes to bring their properties back into use to help manage the high housing need across the area.

The Empty Homes Agency estimates that there are almost 53,000 empty homes in the southwest alone. There are a number across West Dorset and Weymouth & Portland, many of which could be made into homes for local people.

West Dorset District Council and Weymouth & Portland Borough Council have a dedicated Empty Homes Officer available to advise owners of the support options available to help them bring their properties back into use and generate income through rent or by selling.

For owners looking to let their property, both councils have their own dedicated lettings team who can advise and help with managing a property. Both councils can also offer financial assistance to owners with properties in need of essential repairs and in some instances help with VAT relief on improvement works.

Cllr Kevin Brookes, Weymouth and Portland Borough Council Housing Briefholder said: “Empty Homes Week gives us a chance to remind anyone dealing with an empty home that the council can help make the most of their property.

“With high housing demand in the area we can’t afford to let properties lie empty and will be working hard to return empty properties to use.”

Cllr Robert Gould, West Dorset District Council Leader said: “While there are many reasons a property can become empty, doing nothing shouldn’t be an option.

“We encourage anyone dealing with an empty home to consider their options and get in touch if they require any advice or assistance. It’s a council priority to provide homes for residents”
