A group of Childcare students from Weymouth College who have completed NCS as part of their course have supported You First Dorset and Cancer Research UK by fundraising and putting together Christmas boxes.

The group were inspired to help You First Dorset after they heard through a talk about the service they provide for women and children fleeing domestic abuse.  They also wanted to help Cancer Research UK as this was an issue that many of the group had been effected by.

The group completed a sponsored ‘row across the Channel’ where they rowed over 55km, raising over £250.  They used this money to buy items for Christmas gift boxes for the women and children at the refuge.  The rest of the money was donated to Cancer Research UK.

Sophie Peacefull from You First Dorset who collected the gifts said “The gifts are so gratefully received.  The women and children will be really touched by what you’ve done, we are really thankful.”

NCS student Milly Bell said “ NCS has been a good experience.  I’ve got to do new things, have new experiences and help other people.”  Talking about the organisation they supported Holly Moore said “ NCS has given me the chance to help other people and give my time and efforts to worthy causes.”

National Citizen Service (NCS) is a government backed scheme aimed at making young people aged 16-17 more socially aware and responsible, whilst developing their skills and confidence.  As part of the programme participants get to go on an adventurous activity residential, find out more about their local community and make a difference by giving something back.

Team Leader Katy Parker said “The group have been really committed and passionate about helping other people.  They have raised an extraordinary amount of money and made sure that they people at the refuge will have special Christmas.  I’m really proud of what they’ve achieved.”

Weymouth College will be running the NCS programme again during Summer 2016.  If you or someone you know would like to find out more about getting involved email [email protected] or visit the Weymouth College website for more information.
