The final phase of improvements at North Quay start today.
The work focuses on completing widened footways near the former council offices, making it easier and safer for people to walk around the harbour and marina.
The public realm improvements at North Quay are similar to the nearby Custom House Quay, creating a more consistent and welcoming space.
The scheme forms part of wider plans to strengthen Weymouth’s economy by supporting the delivery of new homes and jobs, creating opportunities for local people and enabling sustainable growth.
By enhancing the appearance, accessibility, and overall quality of key public areas, the project is intended to attract investment and increase footfall.
The Council is now in active commercial negotiations with developers interested in bringing forward development in the area.
This initiative contributes to the regeneration of Weymouth’s Waterside Economy and has been funded through the Government’s Regeneration Fund.
Cllr Jon Andrews, Dorset Council’s Cabinet Member for Place Services, said: “North Quay is right at the heart of Weymouth, so it’s important we get it right for residents, businesses and visitors.
“This final phase is about finishing the job and making the area more comfortable and attractive for walking, whether you’re heading to work, visiting the marina or enjoying time by the harbour.
“We’ve already seen the difference these improvements have made at Custom House Quay, and this work will bring that same quality to North Quay. It’s another step forward in supporting local businesses, creating opportunities and helping Weymouth thrive all year round.”
For this final part, contractors will begin a process known as “imprinting”, where the new surface is shaped to look like stone paving. Sometimes described as a “cookie cutter” method, patterns are pressed into the surface to create a high-quality, durable finish.
The wider project, which began late last year, has focused on improving public spaces by giving people on foot more priority in an area. Works have included adding new seating areas, introducing planting, and replacing harbour railings.
North Quay and the marina are central to Weymouth’s identity and play a key role in the council’s plans to support the town’s future.
Alongside improvements at Custom House Quay and ongoing developments at the Peninsula, Weymouth Bowl and across the town centre, this scheme is part of a broader approach to make Weymouth a vibrant, year‑round coastal destination.
While some short-term disruption is expected during the final works, every effort will be made to keep people moving safely and minimise inconvenience.
