Bridport’s new 56-bed recovery centre has taken a major step forward after the council’s planning committee today (Thursday) approved proposals to redevelop the former Sidney Gale care home.
The decision paves the way for construction of a modern reablement facility designed to support older adults recovering after a hospital stay or preventing admission through early intervention.
The approved plans include demolition of the existing building to make way for a state-of-the-art centre featuring household-style clusters of 10–12 ensuite bedrooms. Each cluster will have its own communal lounge, dining and kitchen area, helping to create a homely environment that promotes independence and dignity.
The building will also benefit from dedicated therapy spaces to support daily living skills, as well as dementia-friendly design elements and outside landscaped space. The council is targeting BREEAM Excellence, with the centre set to incorporate low‑energy systems and renewable technologies.
Councillor Steve Robinson, Cabinet Portfolio Member for Adult Social Care, said the scheme reflects the council’s commitment to a preventative approach that keeps people well for longer. ‘This facility will provide short-term recovery and rehabilitation in a warm, supportive setting. It is fantastic to be delivering such an important asset in the heart of Bridport,’ he said.
Demolition work will be carried out by national specialist firm Rhodar, beginning in early March and completing by mid-May. Willmott Dixon has been selected as the construction partner, subject to Cabinet ratification expected in May, with work on the new building starting in July.
The building is due to be opened in summer 2028.
