Former Wirral Labour Councillor Jo Bird, and the Wirral’s only Jewish councillor, was expelled from the Labour Party in November 2021 for speaking at a Labour Against the Witchhunt (LAW) meeting in 2018 and signing a petition in 2020.

Following this week’s local election Ms Bird has regained her seat as one of 13 Green Councillors on Wirral Council.

Here she is speaking, in late 2022, about her experience in Labour and her move to the Greens.

Who is Jo Bird?

Jo Bird is a British political activist and newly elected councillor for the Wirral Metropolitan Borough Council in Merseyside, England. She was elected as a Labour councillor in 2019 to represent the Bromborough ward on the Wirral Council, but was later suspended by the party due to comments she made that were deemed to be antisemitic.

Bird is known for her activism on issues such as mental health, disability rights, and anti-racism. She has been involved in a number of left-wing campaigns and movements, including the Palestine Solidarity Campaign and the Momentum group within the Labour Party.

Bird’s suspension from the Labour Party in 2020 was related to comments she made at a conference in 2018, where she referred to the “Jewish Labour Movement” as “the Jewish Labour Movement for Israel”. Bird later apologised for her comments, but the party still suspended her pending an investigation. In 2021, it was reported that she had been readmitted to the Labour Party after serving a suspension.
