A new Mayor has been elected at the first meeting of Weymouth & Portland Borough Council since elections in the borough earlier this month.

Councillor Richard Kosior was chosen to serve as Mayor and Councillor Kevin Brookes was elected Deputy-Mayor at the meeting last night. (19 May)

Councillor Kosior said: “It is an honour to be elected to serve our wonderful borough. Weymouth and Portland is a fantastic place to live, work and bring up a family as there are so many great things to see and do. I look forward to working for our residents and promoting our area.”

The meeting also welcomed 13 councillors who were elected on 5 May. The borough council elects ‘by thirds’, which means just 12 seats are contested most years. This year there was also a by-election.

Following the elections there are now 14 Conservative councillors, 12 Labour, six Liberal Democrats, two independents, one UKIP and one Green Party councillor. All the election results are available at: www.dorsetforyou.com/elections

The new council also elected Councillor Jeff Cant as Chairman of the Management Committee. Councillor Cant said: “There is so much we can do to take the borough forward. The council is united in looking for the best way of delivering change. I particularly look forward to working with all my very experienced and skilled colleagues irrespective of which political group they belong to in this exciting period.”

Councillors were appointed to serve on borough council committees.

More information about the committees and which councillors will be serving on them will be available shortly at www.dorsetforyou.com/committees/weymouthandportland

Weymouth & Portland Borough Council’s Management Committee will meet on 7 June.
