An exciting new travel scheme allowing people to hire a car at their convenience officially launched last week.

Co-wheels car club lets members book a car for as little as half an hour to as long as 10 days, with access 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Already open to local businesses, car club is also available to Bournemouth residents and visitors.

Working with Bournemouth Borough Council, Co-wheels offers low-cost membership and is available to anyone who has held a valid driving licence for over a year. There are currently eight cars parked in convenient locations in and around Bournemouth, with immediate plans to expand this to 15.

A simple hourly and mileage charge covers fuel, tax, maintenance and comprehensive insurance – so all members need to do is the driving.

Councillor Michael Filer, Cabinet Member for Transport said, “We want to make travel in Bournemouth more accessible by offering people smarter travel choices through various schemes, such as car club. This is a great initiative, as Bournemouth residents and tourists alike can book a vehicle in advance or last minute, for anything from business trips to short weekend breaks.”

The scheme is part of the town’s largest transport programme to make travel in Bournemouth easier, safer and more attractive.

Councillor Filer added; “With more people using schemes such as Co-wheels, it will help reduce car ownership and usage, which will benefit our local environment. The scheme has already proved popular in other locations and I am delighted to see Co-wheels expand to Bournemouth.”

Using a Co-wheels car costs just 13p a mile and as little as £3.75 per hour (or £17.50 per 24 hours).

Alex Elliott, Bournemouth Development Co-ordinator for Co-wheels said, “It’s great that Co-wheels has officially launched in Bournemouth. This unique community car club gives you the freedom of having a car, without the added cost of owning one.

“Co-wheels is easy to join and members simply book their car online or on the phone.”
