New Wayfinding signs to encourage residents and visitors to walk and cycle are to be installed across Poole and Christchurch as part of the council’s Transforming Travel programme. The distinctive Wayfinding Totems will provide easy to read maps clearly showing routes to Stations, Hospitals, car-parks, retail centres, parks and places of interest.
Installation of the totems in Poole, funded as part of the Dorset Local Enterprise Partnership’s major £21m Port of Poole Local Growth Fund improvement programme, will commence in January 2021. Christchurch will also benefit from a further 20 totems which will be installed from March.
Councillor Michael Greene, BCP Council’s Portfolio Holder for Transport said: “The Wayfinding Totems are designed to encourage both residents and visitors to walk and cycle. By providing clear information the maps will show how quick and easy it is to walk or hop on a bike to access local amenities and explore the local neighbourhood.”
The new information signs are being funded by a combination of money from the £102m Transforming Cities Fund (TCF) programme secured by BCP and Dorset councils and Local Growth Deal Funding from the Dorset Local Enterprise Partnership. They will complement the existing totems in central Bournemouth and will eventually be installed at key locations along the proposed TCF sustainable transport routes.
The Wayfinding totems installed in Poole will direct people to key destinations including the Bus /Rail Stations, Hospital, Stadium, Ferry Port, Dolphin Shopping Centre, High Street and the Quay.
The Christchurch Totems will similarly assist with connecting the Rail Station with the Hospital, High Street, Priory and Harbour.
