No Further Action to be Taken Against Kneecap Rapper Mo Chara’ MP’s Comments, Confirms Metropolitan Police

Following contact from the Met police, the following has been updated:

The Metropolitan Police have confirmed that no further action will be taken against Mo Chara, a member of the Irish rap group Kneecap, following the recent terror charge brought against him in May regarding comments about MPs.

Police investigated a video, believed to be from November 2023, in which Ó hAnnaidh told the crowd, “The only good Tory is a dead Tory. Kill your local MP.”

Ó hAnnaidh appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on 18 June and was released on unconditional bail, with a return hearing scheduled for 20 August. However, the Metropolitan Police have now confirmed that the investigation has been concluded and the charge relating to comments about MPs will not proceed.

In a statement, the Metropolitan Police said:

A Met Police spokesperson said:

“A thorough investigation has now been completed by detectives from the Counter Terrorism Command, which included interviewing an individual under caution and seeking early investigative advice from the Crown Prosecution Service. A range of offences were considered as part of the investigation. However, given the time elapsed between the events in the video and the video being brought to police attention, any potential summary only offences were beyond the statutory time limit for prosecution.

“Relevant indictable offences were considered by the investigation team, and, based on all of the current evidence available, a decision has been made that no further action will be taken at this time.

“We understand the impact this decision may have on MPs and their staff. The safety and security of MPs is something that is taken extremely seriously across the whole of policing. MPs who may be concerned about their safety can contact their dedicated local Operation Bridger officer, who can provide further advice and support.”

The news comes just days after Kneecap performed to a large crowd on Glastonbury’s West Holts Stage on 28 June. The BBC chose not to broadcast the performance live amid the ongoing controversy surrounding the group.

During their set, Kneecap openly addressed their legal situation and international support:
“Young Americans agree with us. Young people around the world know what’s going on,” they said, referencing their Coachella performance earlier this year, which is understood to have sparked the initial police investigations.

In a pointed message to UK political leaders, Kneecap took aim at the Prime Minister:
“Palestinian Action isn’t arming Israel. That’s Keir Starmer.” They also led the crowd in chanting “fuck Keir Starmer,” after the Labour leader previously described their Glastonbury appearance as “not appropriate” and called for their removal from the festival lineup.

Later in their performance, Mo Chara added:

“We fucking love the English people. It’s the English government we don’t like. We’re not far away from a Celtic republic. Fuck Keir Starmer.”

At this time, Kneecap has not publicly commented on the Metropolitan Police’s decision to drop the charge.

However, the Met has stated that it has no bearing on the previous charge for an offense that will go to trial in August. That trial will go ahead, and there has been no change on that point.
