“Oh, what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive”

Something about James Cleverly’s recent interview reminded me of Hancock….. and Johnson!

Amongst the vast array of heinous Tory lies, many of you will remember Matt Hancock crowing that their target of 100,000 COVID tests/testing 100,000 people per day by 30th April 2020 had been reached. Of course, it immediately became clear that this was just another huge lie!

For those who don’t know, the Tories decided to count tests merely sent out in the post, wrote to all their party members to advise them to request a test, and counted all those tests as posted on 30th April! The truth is uncovered in the following facts:

Number of tests processed or sent on 28th April = 52,000

Number of tests processed or sent on 29th April = 81,600

The number of tests processed or sent on 30th April = 122,347 (in fact, 73,191 people were tested)

The number of tests processed or sent on each of the 32 days following 30th April = below 100,000!

It was not until 2nd June that the target of 100,000 tests being processed in a day was finally reached, though even then, it was not the 100,000 *people* being tested that Downing Street had announced as the target!

Of course, both Hancock and Johnson repeatedly lied by saying they had ‘thrown a protective ring’ (‘a ring of steel’, no less) around care homes. This has since been revealed (including in the COVID inquiry) as a truly despicable lie, as their reckless actions (in moving people from hospitals to care homes without testing) directly led to the deaths of over 20,000 of our elderly relatives! They should, of course, be in prison, not swanning around on I’m A Celebrity, GBNews and the after-dinner speech circuit, earning fortunes.

And so to the latest BIG lie…

On 2nd January, PM Sunak tweeted out that the government had met its target (set in December 2022) of ‘processing the asylum backlog’ by the end of 2023. Home Secretary James Cleverly declared that “every single legacy application has been processed.” In reality:

1. The original claim actually just meant processing all the ‘legacy cases’ (claims made prior to 28th June 2022).

2. The government has admitted that ‘processing’ really means that just an initial decision has been made. Interviewed on Radio 4’s Today programme, Cleverly said the government had “committed to processing all those applications” and not completing them!

3. The government has admitted that 4,500 cases have NOT been processed (they called these ‘complex cases’…. which obviously don’t count!)

4. The government has admitted that 34,981 cases they have ‘processed’ in the last year have received ‘non-substantive’ decisions. This includes around 17,000 cases that have been withdrawn because the government has no idea where the claimants are!

5. Meanwhile, the number of outstanding asylum claims made since June 2022 stands at 99,000 – bigger than the original ‘legacy’ backlog!

Here we have new Home Secretary James Cleverly, already disgraced by ‘joking’ about slipping the date rape drug Rohypnol into his wife’s drinks on a daily basis! Watch him closely and listen. Do it a couple of times (it’s a very short clip). One doesn’t need to be a poker player to read his face and his voice as he desperately struggles to perpetrate the latest Tory lie, the latest Tory gaslighting of the public, and the latest tangled web of deceit.
