Open 4 Business Dorset has raised over £5000 for local charities over the past 3 years at the annual Awards Ceremony and Dinner. Charities who have benefitted included Weldmar Hospicecare Trust, Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance and the Dorset County Hospital Mammography Appeal in 2011.  This year Open 4 Business Dorset has chosen the RNLI – Weymouth Lifeboat as the charity who will benefit.

Julie Cleaver, Managing Director of Open 4 Business Dorset said “The Steering Group selected the RNLI as a charity which affects most people living and working in Dorset.  In 2012 we have had 2 tragic events which took place in local Dorset waters, the loss of the Purbeck Isle fishing vessel and the Powerboat tragedy, both events brought the outstanding work of the RNLI  into public view, and Open 4 Business Dorset recognised this as an essential charity to sponsor in 2012.”

A presentation will be made to the local Lifeboat crew during November. For every pound raised during the Open 4 Business Awards Dinner it will be matched by the Lloyds Bank Match Fund.

The Open 4 Business Dorset Awards Dinner & Ceremony promises to be an exciting evening where guests will enjoy a menu created by three local leading restaurants, HIX Oyster & Fish House, Yalbury Cottage and Sienna Dorchester. The chefs will work with the Weymouth College catering students to create and serve the dishes to over 180 guests. A celebratory firework display will follow dinner to mark the 10th anniversary of the Open 4 Business Festival. The Awards Ceremony will be opened by Liz Myles, the new principal of Weymouth College who are the main sponsor of Open 4 Business Dorset 2012.

The Open 4 Business Dorset Award Ceremony and Dinner will be held on 25th October 2012 at Weymouth College and is sponsored by Albert Goodman Chartered Accountants.  Tickets are selling very fast but are available at £60 and from [email protected]

The RNLI – the charity that saves lives at sea

Lifeboat1

The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea.  Our lifeboat crews – a staggering 95% of whom are volunteers – provide a 24/7 search and rescue service over 230 lifeboat stations covering 19,000 miles of coastline around the UK and Republic of Ireland. We also provide a seasonal lifeguard service on over 180 beaches and a Flood Rescue Team, which is ready to respond to severe floods wherever they occur.

RNLI lifeboat crews and lifeguards rescue an average of 32 people every day.  In the south-west last year, our volunteer lifeboat crews launched 1,586 times and rescued 1,571 people. Meanwhile, lifeguards on 98 beaches in the region had their second busiest year on record, assisting 13,639 people.

In Dorset last year, 126 people were assisted by RNLI lifeboat crews from Lyme Regis, Weymouth, Poole and Mudeford stations, with volunteers spending 2,584 hours at sea. RNLI lifeguards on the county’s 21 patrolled beaches last year dealt with 2,150 incidents, assisted 2,246 and saved seven lives.

More recently, the charity announced that Weymouth lifeboat station was the second busiest in Dorset for the 2012 summer months of June, July and August, launching to 32 emergencies.

The RNLI relies on voluntary donations to fund our lifesaving services – 98% of our total income comes from donations.  With you support we will continue to save lives at sea.
