31st October 2020
Dear Keir,
We, the undersigned, are writing to you as concerned members of the Labour Party following the suspension of and the removal of the Labour Party whip from the former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn MP.
One of the key findings of the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) report into Labour antisemitism, published on Thursday 29th October, was that there should be no political interference in decisions relating to disciplinary matters. It is, therefore, deeply troubling that despite a promise from yourself to implement the findings of the EHRC report in its entirety, you appear to have reneged upon this promise within a matter of hours. In publicly offering your ‘full support’ for the decision taken by the General Secretary of the Labour Party David Evans to suspend Jeremy Corbyn, we believe that you intervened in disciplinary matters and in doing so, ran roughshod over the EHRC’s recommendations. By acting in such a manner, we contend that the Leadership and General Secretary have actively undermined the EHRC report.
The suspension of Jeremy Corbyn on unclear grounds has also distracted from the real issue: antisemitism within the Party and the procedures and protocols in place for tackling it. We feel that the Leadership have squandered an important opportunity for members to reflect upon the existence of antisemitism within the Party and in wider society as a whole. We also believe that the Party has missed a chance to underline its commitment to creating a robust, fair, consistent and transparent complaints process.
For the sake of Labour Party unity, we request that a full meeting of the Party’s National Executive Committee is convened at the earliest opportunity so that Jeremy Corbyn’s suspension can be reviewed and discussed in a manner which is deserved of such divisive action.
As members we believe that unity, not division, is vital if the Party is to make the progress that is so desperately needed in effectively tackling discrimination and bigotry in whatever odious form it may take.
Yours faithfully,’
