Pacific Curls have travelled the world with their unique brand of sensational music, that is both enthralling and transglobal. With a cornerstone of backbeat Pacific rhythms, vivacious fiddle playing and evocative Maori vocals, lyrics and instrumentation, Pacific Curls have pioneered a fusion sound that seamlessly blends their indigenous roots and this October they will be performing here in Dorset for two special nights with Artsreach before moving on the Somerset, Devon and Cornwall as part of a bigger South West rural tour.
The trio arrive from New Zealand with an impressive instrumental collection, featuring the ukulele, cajon, fiddle, Taonga Puoro (traditional Maori instruments), guitar, stomp box and kalimba. With lyrics performed in Te Reo Maori, Rotuman and English, Pacific Curls have a rapidly growing international reputation, following appearances at several WOMAD festivals and at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games, as well as regular worldwide touring.
Their use of traditional Celtic tunes, expressive vocals, political and moving lyrics in Maori and English and their skill with world instruments combines to create a distinctive sound with a contemporary and intriguing edginess. Be sure to catch them up close as they travel through the County.
During their visit to Dorset, the trio will also be running a special Maori and Pacific Songs singing workshop in Piddletrenthide, offering singers of all abilities the opportunity to learn a number of traditional songs and participate in a remarkable vocal tradition.
