People of Caerphilly Choose Plaid Cymru Over Reform UK and Labour in By-election

Plaid Cymru have achieved a historic victory in Caerphilly, winning the Senedd by-election for the first time and overturning more than a century of Labour dominance in the area.

The Welsh nationalist party’s candidate, Lindsay Whittle, secured 15,960 votes, defeating Reform UK’s Llyr Powell, who received 12,113 votes, and Labour’s Richard Tunnicliffe, who trailed far behind with 3,713 votes.

Whittle, aged 72, was visibly emotional as the result was announced. Having stood as a Plaid Cymru candidate 13 times since 1983, he will now represent Caerphilly in the Senedd until the next election in 2026.

“This is Caerphilly and Wales telling Cardiff and Westminster that we want a better deal for every corner of Wales,” said Whittle in his victory speech. “We’ve beaten billionaire-backed Reform and shown that when people come together, change is possible. This is the dawn of new leadership and a new beginning for Wales.”

Turnout stood at 50.43%, significantly higher than in 2021.

The result is being seen as a major blow to both Reform UK and Labour. Reform had hoped to convert its growing national poll numbers into a landmark win, but fell short. Labour, meanwhile, suffered a humiliating third-place finish — losing a seat it had held in every Senedd election since 1999, and an area it had dominated in Westminster elections for over a century.

Plaid Cymru leader Rhun ap Iorwerth hailed the result as the “start of a reset of politics in Wales”, saying his party’s goal is to take control of the Senedd in 2026. “We have to replace Labour — not for its own sake, but to deliver better outcomes for Wales,” he said.

Labour figures admitted the scale of the setback. Cabinet Office minister Nick Thomas-Symonds said frustration with the “pace of change” had cost them votes, while Deputy First Minister Huw Irranca-Davies urged the party to focus on “bread and butter” issues such as the cost of living and community renewal.

Reform UK’s chair David Bull blamed a recent poll for “changing people’s minds” and claimed some Liberal Democrat and Conservative supporters voted tactically for Plaid to keep Reform out.

The Conservatives and Liberal Democrats both lost their deposits.

For Lindsay Whittle, the win marked the culmination of a political journey spanning more than four decades. As he quipped with a smile: “This is better than scoring the winning try for Wales in the Rugby World Cup.”

Plaid Cymru yn trechu Reform UK a Llafur yng Nghaerffili

Mae Plaid Cymru wedi sicrhau buddugoliaeth hanesyddol yng Nghaerffili, gan ennill yr isetholiad i’r Senedd am y tro cyntaf ac yn chwalu dros ganrif o oruchafiaeth Lafur yn yr ardal.

Sicrhaodd ymgeisydd y blaid genedlaetholgar Gymreig, Lindsay Whittle, 15,960 o bleidleisiau, gan drechu Llyr Powell o Reform UK, a gafodd 12,113 o bleidleisiau, a Richard Tunnicliffe o Lafur, a orffennodd ymhell y tu ôl gyda 3,713 o bleidleisiau.

Roedd Whittle, sydd yn 72 oed, yn amlwg yn emosiynol wrth i’r canlyniad gael ei gyhoeddi. Wedi sefyll fel ymgeisydd Plaid Cymru 13 gwaith ers 1983, bydd bellach yn cynrychioli Caerffili yn y Senedd tan yr etholiad nesaf yn 2026.

“Dyma Gaerffili a Chymru yn dweud wrth Gaerdydd a San Steffan ein bod ni eisiau bargen well i bob cornel o Gymru,” meddai Whittle yn ei araith fuddugoliaeth. “Rydyn ni wedi trechu Reform, sydd wedi’i chefnogi gan filiwnyddion, ac wedi dangos pan fydd pobl yn dod at ei gilydd, bod newid yn bosibl. Dyma ddechrau arweinyddiaeth newydd a dechrau newydd i Gymru.”

Roedd y trothwy pleidleisio yn 50.43%, yn sylweddol uwch na’r un yn 2021.

Mae’r canlyniad yn cael ei ystyried yn ergyd fawr i Reform UK a Llafur. Roedd Reform wedi gobeithio trosi ei chynnydd mewn polau cenedlaethol yn fuddugoliaeth arwyddocaol, ond methodd. Yn y cyfamser, dioddefodd Llafur siom chwerw, gan orffen yn drydydd ac yn colli sedd a oedd ganddi ym mhob etholiad Senedd ers 1999, yn ogystal ag ardal y bu iddi ei chadw ers dros ganrif yn etholiadau San Steffan.

Croesawodd arweinydd Plaid Cymru, Rhun ap Iorwerth, y canlyniad fel “dechrau ailosod gwleidyddiaeth yng Nghymru”, gan ddweud mai nod y blaid yw cymryd rheolaeth o’r Senedd yn 2026. “Mae’n rhaid i ni ddisodli Llafur — nid er ei fwyn hi ei hun, ond er mwyn cyflawni canlyniadau gwell i Gymru,” meddai.

Derbyniodd ffigurau Llafur raddfa’r siom. Dywedodd y gweinidog Nick Thomas-Symonds fod rhwystredigaeth gyda “chyflymder newid” wedi costio pleidleisiau i’r blaid, tra’n annogodd Huw Irranca-Davies, Dirprwy Brif Weinidog Cymru, y blaid i ganolbwyntio ar faterion “bara menyn” fel costau byw a bywiogi cymunedau.

Beiodd cadeirydd Reform UK, David Bull, arolwg barn diweddar am “newid meddyliau pobl”, gan honni fod rhai cefnogwyr Democratiaid Rhyddfrydol a Chonservatif wedi pleidleisio’n dactegol dros Blaid er mwyn atal Reform.

Collodd y Ceidwadwyr a’r Democratiaid Rhyddfrydol eu hadneuoedd.

I Lindsay Whittle, mae’r fuddugoliaeth hon yn coronni taith wleidyddol dros bedwar degawd. Fel y dywedodd ef gyda gwên:
“Mae hyn yn well na sgorio’r gais buddugol dros Gymru yng Nghwpan Rygbi’r Byd.”
