The Dorset Police and Crime Panel have today, Wednesday 19 October, appointed Colin Pipe as Acting Police and Crime Commissioner.
On Wednesday 5 October 2016, Deborah Underhill, the Police and Crime Commissioner’s wife, was taken seriously ill and has been in Southampton General Hospital since, receiving treatment for a subarachnoid haemorrhage.
Martyn Underhill remains in post, but day to day decisions will be made by Colin Pipe, Acting Police and Crime Commissioner, until further notice.
Martyn Underhill, Dorset Police and Crime Commissioner, said; “My wife’s collapse in Wimborne Square was completely unexpected, and I would like to thank the off-duty nurse who rushed to help, the South West Ambulance Crew who arrived within three minutes, and the superb team at the Wessex Neurological Unit. These professionals literally saved her life.
“My wife’s doctors have advised me that it is vital that I spend time supporting and helping her recovery. I have absolute confidence in Colin to act on my behalf, and I thank Cllr Adams and the members of the Dorset Police and Crime Panel for their support during a very difficult time.”
Colin Pipe, Acting Police and Crime Commissioner, said; “I am saddened by this news and my thoughts are with Deborah and Martyn at this time.
“I would like to reassure the public that, in relation to the work of the office, it is business as usual and we are continuing our work to ensure Dorset residents receive an efficient and effective police service.”
Cllr John Adams, Chair of the Dorset Police and Crime Panel, said; “The Dorset Police and Crime Panel has the responsibility for appointing an Acting Police and Crime Commissioner, and are fully supportive of this interim arrangement. As recently as June the Panel had the opportunity to consider and question Colin on his credentials and we were unanimous in our support.
“The Police and Crime Panel convey their sincere wishes to Deborah and Martyn in this difficult time, and their hopes for a speedy recovery.”
We know that many people will wish to pass on their best wishes to Deborah and the Commissioner, although we would urge that their privacy is respected during this time. The Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner will be in touch with members of the public and partners to re-arrange appointments and engagements where necessary.
