Police Warn Public Following Suspected Arson in Sherborne

Detectives investigating a suspected arson in Sherborne are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.

Dorset Police was alerted by the fire service at 11.20pm on Thursday 9 April 2026 to reports of a car fire in South Avenue.

A further report was received that the fire had spread to a nearby property and fences.

One person was taken to hospital having suffered smoke inhalation.

Police have been liaising with the fire service and the cause of the fire is believed to be deliberate.

Detective Inspector Rich Barnett, of Dorset County CID, said: “We are continuing to investigate this incident and I am appealing for any witnesses who have not already spoken to police or anyone with information that might assist our investigation to please contact us.

“I am keen to hear from anyone who witnessed any suspicious activity in the area around the relevant time and would also ask residents in the vicinity of South Avenue and Lenthay Road to please review any home CCTV or doorbell camera footage from around 9.10pm to 11.20pm on Thursday 9 April 2026.

“From our enquiries we also believe a male suspect from the scene may have sustained superficial injuries from the fire. I would urge anyone who has concerns around a man who has sustained suspected burn injuries in unexplained circumstances to please get in touch.

“Local officers have been carrying out additional patrols in this area since the fire and can be approached by members of the public with information or concerns.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Dorset Police online or by calling 101, quoting occurrence number 55260050434. Alternatively, independent charity Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously online using its website or by calling Freephone 0800 555 111.
