A sea of twinkling lights, a marching band, giant illuminated anchors and even a glimpse of Father Christmas are just some of the highlights when the Poole Christmas Maritime Light Trail launches on Saturday.
This free illuminating trail is returning for five weeks over the Christmas period, thanks to a partnership between Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) Council and main sponsor Poole Business Improvement District (BID), with further support from South Western Railway.
The festive trail features several maritime light installations in celebration of Poole’s nautical heritage including a tall ship, giant anchor and starfish tree decorations.
There are also some new installations to delight visitors, including a 3D walk through ribbon arch, illuminated tree with a smartphone app interactive element to control the tree’s lights, Poole lettering and icicle lights hanging from the buildings in Poole Old Town.
On the launch night, Poole BID’s choral singers will be in Falkland Square from 4.30pm as the lights turn on around dusk, with further renditions at 5.30pm outside The Fish Shambles. The Christmas choirs will continue on Saturdays up to 16 December.
A marching band will also be following the festive trail down to Poole Quay on the launch night, with rumours they’ll be joined along the way by Father Christmas handing out free lollipops.

“Our successful working relationship with Poole BID alongside South Western Railway, has enabled Poole’s lights to continue for a second year running which is great news for residents and local businesses – as well as for our visitors, who can come and enjoy a free Christmas light trail.
“I encourage everyone to come to Poole – especially by train or bus wherever possible – and get in the festive spirit over the five weeks this light trail is on.”
There will be a pop-up Christmas market in Hennings on the Quay every Saturday and Sunday in the lead-up to Christmas from 25 November, selling a range of festive wares and local produce.
In addition, Poole BID will be launching a free window light trail competition where you can win a family ticket to see Aladdin in pantomime at Lighthouse, Poole, among other prizes.
During December there will also be a window display competition where you can win £100 to spend in the town.

This will all be accompanied by choirs at Christmas and contribute to the festive atmosphere for a more immersive experience.
