Like many town centres across the country, Poole High Street is facing real challenges. Empty units, rising rents and the ongoing cost-of-living crisis have made it harder for many local people and businesses to thrive.
That said, there are still brilliant pockets of our town centre that show what can work. Areas like Kingland are home to a growing community of independent shops and creatives who bring life, character and pride to Poole. They are proof of the potential our high street still holds when the right support is in place.
After years of decline under the last Conservative government, I hope Labour’s new five-point plan for high streets delivers the investment and action needed to build on this potential – tackling antisocial behaviour, bringing back face-to-face banking, supporting small businesses, stopping late payments and turning empty shops into community hubs.
Poole High Street deserves more than warm words. With proper support and sustained investment, we can protect what’s already working and help our town centre thrive again.
