Portland Town Council has expressed its deep sorrow at the passing of Councillor Sandy West, a figure who, for nearly a quarter of a century, stood at the heart of civic life on the island. Her loss will be felt not only within the Council chamber but across the entire community she served with such dedication and warmth.
For almost 25 years, Sandy represented the people of Portland with steadfast commitment. Her long tenure as a Town Councillor was marked by diligence, integrity and an unwavering belief in the value of local democracy. She served as Mayor on more than one occasion — a testament to the respect and trust she commanded among colleagues and residents alike. Those who worked alongside her describe her as a valued and integral member of the Council, someone whose contributions were thoughtful, measured and always rooted in the best interests of the community.
But Sandy’s service extended far beyond formal civic duties. She was, above all, a community person — someone who believed that public life was about participation, not position. She gave her time generously, whether supporting local initiatives, attending events or volunteering in roles that brought pride not just to Portland, but to the nation.
In 2012, she served as a Games Maker at the London Olympics, playing her part in an event that showcased Britain at its best. Two years later, she was involved in the poignant Poppy display at the Tower of London, contributing to a powerful national act of remembrance that resonated with millions. In more recent years, she became a fantastic volunteer with b-side, supporting arts and cultural projects that enrich Portland’s creative life.
These experiences reflected the breadth of her interests and the depth of her commitment. Sandy understood that a thriving community is built not only through policy and meetings, but through shared experiences, creativity and collective remembrance.
Above all, she was loved and well respected. Her presence — warm, steady and encouraging — was a constant in local life. For many residents, she was not just a councillor but a familiar and reassuring figure, someone who listened, cared and acted.
Portland Town Council has extended its heartfelt condolences to Sandy’s loved ones during this difficult time. As the island reflects on her legacy, it is clear that her years of service, her generosity of spirit and her devotion to Portland will not be forgotten.
Sandy West leaves behind a community stronger for her efforts and immeasurably grateful for her years of dedication. She will be greatly missed.
