Update: There has been a serious incident on Weymouth Bay this afternoon when a Powerboat that was racing in the final race of this years P1 Powerboat Championships flipped over. The boat was caught up in the channel’s of other powerboat’s wash, and as is normal with Powerboat racing the Driver and Navigator are not strapped in, so are hopefully thrown clear. This is in fact what happened but it has resulted in injuries to the Driver and Navigator who have been named as Mike Lovell and Dan Whapples. They have been airlifted to hospital. Two Helicopters were used. The Somerset Air Ambulance landed on the beach to take one man. The other was rescued by the Weymouth Lifeboat and then winched into the Portland Rescue Helicopter. Both men have been taken to Southampton Hospital, in fact both men are actually from Southampton, lets hope they are soon recovering and the news is not too serious.
