in Solidarity with Women Worldwide
On Saturday, a powerful rally was held in Weymouth town centre to mark International Women’s Day, organised by the Dorset Palestine Solidarity Campaign (DPSC). Over 70 people gathered to stand in solidarity with women around the globe, from Palestine to Portland, in a call for gender equality and justice.
Eleven women spoke from a range of backgrounds, including trade unionists, climate activists, and a local school student, on issues ranging from workers’ rights and healthcare to the impact of conflict on women and girls in Gaza, Sudan, and Congo.
Sam, one of the event organisers, introduced the event:
“Palestinian women have endured 17 months of Israel’s war on Gaza. They have cared for their families
while resisting occupation and ethnic cleansing. They are an inspiration to women fighting oppression everywhere.
“Trump threatens Palestinians with death while he promotes vicious attacks on women and women’s rights. Today is more important than ever to celebrate International Women’s Day—from Portland to Palestine!”

In their speech, Naomi, Co-Chair of the Dorset PSC, emphasized the importance of inclusive feminism and global solidarity:
“It’s great to see so many people here today to stand in solidarity with women. We’re standing with women in Palestine, Sudan, Congo, Weymouth, Portland, and beyond. This IWD—and every other day—our feminism is empty if it doesn’t include all women. When conversation around equal rights only focuses on white, middle-class women, or on ‘success’ within capitalist structures that harm women—that is not feminism!”
Local student Naira pointed to women’s historical struggles:
“Do not be the person who forgets the past. Do not fall victim to historical amnesia. We must educate younger generations about the struggles women have fought, and the battles they continue to fight.”
Somayah, a speaker of Palestinian heritage, spoke of the killing of internationally renowned Israeli journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, shot down by an Israeli sniper:
“There is only one way to honour Shireen. On International Women’s Day, stand with women opposing genocide; stand with Palestine!”
The rally concluded with a performance from the Dorset Red Choir.
DPSC joint chair, Naomi, said of the event:
“Today’s event has served as a powerful reminder of the ongoing struggles women face around the world and the need for collective action in the fight for women’s rights, equality, and justice.”.
