With the Paralympics well underway, a local care home has decided to host their own version of the sporting tournament.
Residents and team members at Care UK’s The Potteries, on York Road, brought Paris to Poole as it opened its doors for local people to enjoy their version of the Games.
The event came as The Potteries joined The Big Care UK Sports Day, which saw over 130 Care UK homes across the UK host sports days for the local community and showcase what life in a care home is really like.
Special guests, the Deputy Mayor of Poole, Councillor Jo Clements and the Deputy Mayor’s Consort, John Butterworth, both joined in on the fun. Residents and guests got competitive with games that were designed to be accessible so everyone could take part. Starting off with fun musical seated exercises hosted by team members from the Poole David Lloyd Club to get everyone warmed up and moving. Followed by a competitive game of wheelchair relay and tug of war.
Topping of the day everyone enjoyed a delicious barbeque made by Head Chef Dan Hartnell and the catering team.
Commenting on the event, residents Anne Jackson and Phyllis Bentley, said: “We loved the sports day! It was a wonderful day full of fun, smiles and sunshine – the BBQ and wheelchair race was our favourite part!”
Zita Turner, Home Manager at The Potteries, said: “We were delighted to bring Paris to Poole with our sporting celebrations.
“Keeping fit is important for everyone, but exercise has many additional benefits for older people, from reducing the risk of falls to increasing wellbeing and confidence. Here at The Potteries, we know just how important physical activity is, so we always encourage residents to stay active – and our own sporting tournament was a great way to do just that.
