Reform UK Candidate Appears to be Pretending to be a Registered Nurse

A political row has erupted following questions raised by the media outlet The Daily Scar and Dr. Russ Jackson over a Reform UK candidate’s apparent claim to be an “NHS nurse”, after online investigators challenged the accuracy of her professional credentials. The controversy highlights not only the importance of transparency in public life but also the potentially serious legal consequences of misrepresenting protected professional titles in the UK.

The issue came to prominence after Dr. Russ Jackson, known online as “GET A GRIP!”, publicly dissected campaign material that appeared to present the candidate as having NHS nursing credentials. However, scrutiny of her employment history appears to tell a different story.

According to her LinkedIn profile, the candidate is listed as a “Registered Nurse” at Maria Mallaband Care Group Ltd., a private care home provider based in Crewe, not part of the NHS. While working in the care sector is both valuable and demanding, it is distinct from employment within the National Health Service, and the difference is not merely semantic.

Further complicating matters, archived job listings show that Maria Mallaband Care Group advertised roles for care assistants in Crewe as recently as August 2022. Care assistants play a vital role in supporting residents, but the position does not require registration as a nurse. The distinction is critical because, under UK law, the titles “nurse” and “registered nurse” are legally protected.

Checks carried out by members of the public on the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) register, the official body responsible for regulating nurses and midwives in the UK, reportedly found no listing for an individual matching the candidate’s name, either as “Vicky Shaw” or “Victoria Shaw” in the relevant location. If accurate, this raises serious questions about whether the title has been used appropriately.

The legal framework in this area is clear. Under the Nursing and Midwifery Order 2001, it is a criminal offence for an individual to falsely claim to be a registered nurse or to use a protected title without being on the NMC register. Conviction can result in fines and, in some cases, further legal sanctions. The purpose of this legislation is to protect the public by ensuring that only qualified and regulated professionals present themselves as such.

Beyond the legal implications, there are also potential electoral consequences. Misrepresentation of qualifications by political candidates can fall under electoral law, particularly if misleading information is used to influence voters. While each case depends on its specifics, knowingly providing false or misleading statements about a candidate’s background could trigger complaints or investigations under electoral regulations.

The controversy also touches on wider concerns about standards in the care sector. In September 2025, a care home in Slough operated by Maria Mallaband Care Group was ordered to improve following an inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). Inspectors identified breaches of five legal regulations, including concerns about staff conduct and risks to residents. While there is no suggestion that the candidate was directly involved, the findings add further context to the scrutiny surrounding her professional claims.

For Reform UK, the episode represents an unwelcome distraction and raises broader questions about candidate vetting processes. For the public, it serves as a reminder that professional titles, particularly in fields like healthcare, carry legal weight and public trust.

Remember the Paedophile?

Ultimately, if the allegations prove accurate, the consequences could extend well beyond political embarrassment. Misusing a protected title is not simply a matter of optics; it is a potential criminal offence, designed to safeguard both the integrity of professions and the safety of the public.
