Let the people decide, Alan.
Racism is a system of prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against a person or people on the basis of their membership in a particular racial or ethnic group, typically one that is a minority or marginalised. This system is founded on the belief that different races possess distinct characteristics, abilities, or qualities, often to the detriment of others, and creates a racial hierarchy where one group is considered superior. Racism is not merely individual acts of bias or hatred; it is also embedded in the policies, practices, and norms of institutions, leading to systemic inequity in areas such as housing, education, employment, and criminal justice. It operates by assigning value and granting or withholding power and opportunity based on perceived racial differences.
Homophobia encompasses a range of negative attitudes, feelings, and actions directed toward homosexuality or people who are identified or perceived as being lesbian, gay, bisexual, or queer. It includes prejudice, discrimination, bullying, and outright hostility rooted in the belief that heterosexuality is the only normal or natural sexual orientation. This aversion can be manifested interpersonally through slurs or violence, institutionally through laws and policies that disadvantage LGBTQ+ people, and internally, where individuals may internalise societal stigma about their own sexuality. A related term, transphobia, describes similar prejudice directed specifically at transgender people, while homophobia more commonly addresses sexual orientation rather than gender identity.
Is Alan a racist and a homophobe? Of course racist and homophobic Alan is a racist and a homophobe. Who could possibly think otherwise? Oh yes. Alan does.
