Places are still available for older residents in Bournemouth to take part in a theory refresher course designed to help keep people confident and safe on the roads.
The new course offers drivers aged 70 and over, a chance for just £5 to take part in a friendly discussion session about driving issues. Those who attend will have the opportunity learn about new driving techniques, changes to the Highway Code, negotiating at roundabouts and junctions safely, and best practice for dual carriageway and motorway driving.
After the course participants will have the option to attend a further free practical 90 minute one-to-one driving session with an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI). In these sessions drivers can practice both urban and rural driving, improve defensive driving techniques, hazard awareness and road positioning, as well as learning techniques that can help reduce fuel consumption and general vehicle wear and tear.
Councillor Michael Filer, Cabinet Member for Planning and Transport, said; “By providing this course we are enabling older residents to retain their independence and gain greater confidence when travelling on the road.”
Bournemouth Borough Council is funding the courses for Bournemouth residents as part of a wider partnership with Dorset County Council and Borough of Poole. The Council is committed to building a better Bournemouth by reducing accidents on Bournemouth’s roads by 40 percent by 2020.
The driver theory refresher sessions are available on 20 November at the Strouden Community Centre and 16 December at LV Streetwise Centre, 10am – 12pm; places are limited so early booking is advised.
