Following several trips to France to witness events first hand, Bridport’s refugee solidarity group “Team Calais” is hosting a special evening at their base at the Chapel in the Garden to raise awareness and funds for those forced to seek refuge outside their home countries.
On Saturday 22nd October doors open from 6.30pm when Team Calais chefs will be serving up a typical meal prepared daily by British, French and international volunteers for the thousands of men, women and children trapped in limbo at the unofficial Jungle camp on the outskirts of Calais.
The after-dinner speaker is Sushila Dhall, manager of therapeutic services for Refugee Resource in Oxford. A frequent visitor to Bridport, Sushila will talk about the plight of those who seek asylum here – why they are forced to flee, the journeys they undertake and what happens to them when they arrive in the UK. She will also suggest ways we can best offer them our solidarity.
“I applaud the humane people of Bridport for their courage to face one of the most pressing moral issues of our time.” says Sushila. “If more towns followed Bridport’s lead, the UK would be a happier, less fearful and less angry place.”
There will be a chance to ask questions, hear more about the work of Team Calais and to get involved in future solidarity activities. The evening will be rounded off with musical refreshment and some rousing tunes from Julie Patchouli who is travelling from Glastonbury to support the cause.
A recommended donation of £6 or more is welcomed and all funds raised will be used to assist asylum seekers in Calais and via the Hardship Fund of Refugee Resource.
