Register your team for the Wheels Relay Challenge and compete on Bournemouth’s town centre ‘grand prix style’ circuit

Local cycle enthusiasts can now enter the Wheels Relay Challenge and battle it out to be crowned championson Monday 26 May.

As part of the Wheels Night Ride event at this year’s Wheels Festival (24-26 May), the race sees 12 teams of four compete against each other on the closed town centre circuit.

Starting at 7.40pm each rider will complete one lap on the specially designed road circuit.  The route flows between ascents and descents and incorporates a number of pinch points, before the rider hands over to their team mates in front of an excited crowd. The first full relay team to cross the line will be declared the winners.

To enjoy this rare opportunity, teams must be made up of four riders aged 18 or over and include at least one female member.

The Wheels Relay Challenge is open to everyone living within a BH postcode, who pre-register their team online at www.bournemouthwheels.co.uk/take-partunder “Cycle Races”. It costs just £10 per rider, which includes the entry fee and t-shirt.

Councillor Michael Filer, Cabinet Member for Transport, said, “We are delighted to be hosting the Wheels Relay Challenge.  This is a fantastic opportunity for keen cyclists to go head to head on the challenging closed town centre circuit.”

Building on the success of last year’s Sky Ride event which saw teams from across Bournemouth’s major businesses battle it out in a similar corporate race, this year the race is set to be even more challenging with the added relay element.

Councillor Filer, added; “This year we are opening this opportunity up to cyclists of all race levels.  Team work will be crucial to those who want to receive champion status.  I would encourage all cycling enthusiasts to give it a go and register your team now.”

Wheels Night Ride is a fantastic opportunity to experience the joys of cycling, whether you want to take part in the action, or simply soak up the festival atmosphere.

Kicking off Wheels Night Ride is the FREE Bears on Bikes community bike ride, starting from Boscombe Pier at 6.30pm. Bring your bike dressed with a bear and help raise money for the Round Table’s Children’s Wish.

Later in the evening top cyclists will go head to head on the town centre circuit at 8.25pm for the Elite Race. Cheer them on, as they try to race their way to victory at speeds of up to 40mph.

Brighten up your bikes for the spectacular Nightglow Ride which starts from Pier Approach at 9.30pm. Both adults and children on two wheels can take part in this FREE event and enjoy cycling on car free roads for a unique town centre experience.

For the finale, watch the sky light up with a fantastic firework display over the seafront at 10.15pm.

Wheels Night Ride is brought to you by Bournemouth Borough Council, as part of their commitment to improve cycling in the town and encourage more people to get about by bike.
