The Dickies Quad Beach Cross will be going ahead onWeymouth Beach in February 2014.
The event will feature both adult and youth riders from the UK and Europe riding quad bikes, beach buggies and solo motorcycles around tracks on Weymouth Beach along with live commentary from 22 to 23 February.
Youth riders aged from 8 to 16 will be performing on Saturday 22 February. On Sunday 23 February adults will show off their skills. The beach course when constructed will be approximately one mile long and is designed to test the riders to the limits. They will reach speeds of 70 mph while competitively negotiating holes, jumps, sharpchicanes and a high speed straight.
A trade area will also be set up in front of Weymouth Pavilion.
Events Director of ORE Events, Duncan Irons said: “This is the second year we have run the event working in association with Weymouth & Portland Borough Council and together we are keen to make this a major annual event in the borough’s calendar and also generate significant revenue for local businesses outside of the summer season.
“We are really excited to be holding the Dickies Quad Beach Cross in Weymouth again. The beach is a fantastic venue to host this motoring display. We want to provide a great occasion for all the family to enjoy.”
Over the weekend there will be a screened pay-to-view spectator area on a section of Weymouth Promenade from Weymouth Pavilion to Kings Statue which will be run by the organiser ORE Events throughout the two-day event.
Tickets for the spectator area are £5 per person and children under 16 can attend for free. The decision to make the international cross a paid for event comes after a consultation by ORE Events andWeymouth & Portland Borough Councilwas carried out with residents and businesses in Autumn last year.
The 2014 event will be held as a trial event and the borough council would like to have feedback from people who attend. Feedback given will help form any future arrangements.
The agreement with ORE Events will ensure that a pedestrian thoroughfare along the Promenade will be maintained at all times, together with unhindered access to the beach from north of the beach to Jubilee Clock.
An agreed proportion of the spectator income will be paid to Weymouth & Portland Borough Council as an event hire fee.
Weymouth & Portland Borough Council Tourism and Culture Brief Holder Ian Bruce said: “This is an exciting new event for the borough, generating a much needed economic boost to the town in the off peak season with visitors using our shops, cafes and accommodation providers.
“The pay per view spectator area will provide necessary funds to sustain and develop the event for 2014 and the future. We would also like to have feedback from people about what they think of the Dickies Quad Beach Cross to help develop plans for the future.”
