Robin Cook’s remarkable Iraq resignation speech was twenty years ago today

There are very few principled politicians. Most are power hungry, propagandising, ego driven charlatans who drown us in lies and soundbites. Very few are prepared to sacrifice themselves for their constituents or the public and the planet generally. We neally had one as PM in 2017 but the establishment killed that off. The same can be said of what happened twenty years ago when Tony Blair and his toxic chums took the UK in to an illegal war on the anal trail of George Bush Jnr and the USA.

Iraq and Afghanistan were devastated by the colonial and profiteering exploits of Bush and Blair and the sycophants who lined up behind them. A devastation, the world is still suffering the fallout from right now and will continue to do well in to the future.

One man though stood up and said ‘NO!’. A man in government at the time who was willing to sacrice his position and influence for what turned out to be exactly the right call. Robin Cook told the country what was about to happen and stepped down when many around him fell in line and did the opposite.

The following speech, which stands alone as one of the most powerful political speeches in modern times, should be listened to and quoted well in to the future for what it turned out to be. A prophecy.

Robert Finlayson “Robin” Cook died three and a half years later. At the start of August 2005, Cook and his wife, Gaynor, took a two-week holiday in the Scottish Highlands. At around 2:20 pm on 6 August 2005, while he walked down Ben Stack in Sutherland, Cook suddenly suffered a severe heart attack, collapsed, lost consciousness and fell about 8 feet (2.4 m) down a ridge. He died before the helicopter ambulance could get him to hospital. He was 59.

Imagine the world if we had followed the likes of Robin Cook and not Bush and Blair.
