It is with deep regret that the trustees of Shire Hall Museum in Dorchester announce that, due to ongoing financial pressures, Shire Hall will be forced to close on Thursday 8 October 2026. In this forthcoming week we will continue to welcome our communities and celebrate the achievements of our outstanding team of staff and volunteers.
Several years of challenging economic conditions and pressure on external funding sources, combined with the unavoidable and increasing costs associated with managing a large & complex historic building, have contributed to this decision.
Discussions have been taking place and are continuing with stakeholders and partner organisations, to secure the best possible future for the heritage and community asset that is Shire Hall.
We are proud of the exhibitions, performances, education and community events that have happened here, which have had a positive impact on many people’s lives.
Most of all, we are proud of our wonderful team of staff and volunteers who have contributed so much and have made a real difference to people who have engaged with or visited Shire Hall.
We would also like to thank all the people who have visited Shire Hall Museum, exhibited work, performed here or supported us in other ways.
We will be making further announcements in due course.
Rose Wallis, Trustee
