A man, identified as Anton Hull from Somerset, was sentenced to jail after a fatal collision with 29-year-old Sarah Baker. He had filmed himself in an intoxicated state before driving and fatally hitting Ms. Baker’s oncoming car near Wincanton. Emergency services responded to the incident on Anchor Hill, alerted by a member of the public shortly after the collision occurred around 11:05 pm on August 18.

Witnesses at the scene suspected Hull had been drinking, with one noting the strong smell of alcohol. A blood test at Yeovil District Hospital indicated he was one-and-a-half to two times over the legal alcohol limit. It was reported that Hull had been drinking at a pub in South Cadbury, consuming rum and lager before being refused service from 10:30 pm.

In court, Hull, 21, admitted causing death by dangerous driving. He was sentenced to six years in jail and received a nine-year driving ban by North Somerset Courthouse. Judge Edward Burgess highlighted Hull’s reckless behavior, stating that his decision to drive despite being heavily intoxicated led to the tragic death of Sarah Baker.

Officer Dai Nicholas expressed sympathy for Sarah Baker’s family, acknowledging the profound pain caused by this preventable incident. He hoped that awareness of this tragedy would deter others from driving under the influence of alcohol, emphasizing the fatal consequences such actions can have.

In a heartfelt statement, Sarah Baker’s family mourned her loss, describing her as a caring, loving individual whose life was needlessly taken due to one person’s selfishness. They emphasized the preventable nature of her death and the devastating impact it had on their lives and those around her.

In a moving homage to Sarah, her family expressed their profound grief following the hearing: “The void left by Sarah’s absence has pierced our hearts deeply.

“More than a year has passed, yet every single day is a struggle as we navigate life without her.

“At 29, Sarah had recently completed her master’s degree and had just made an offer to purchase her first home. In her final days, she devoted herself to supporting her sister and her newborn baby for four weeks, simply heading to Somerset for a weekend getaway.

“She embodied unparalleled care, loyalty, and generosity as a daughter, sister, niece, cousin, friend, and, most recently, an aunt in the lives of those fortunate enough to know her.

“The overwhelming anguish we endure feels utterly needless considering Sarah’s passing could have been entirely prevented.

“The self-centered actions of one individual have brought her life to an end and shattered the lives surrounding her.”

Dai Nicholas, a collision investigations officer from Avon and Somerset Police, extended his sympathies to Sarah Baker’s family, highlighting the sheer tragedy of her life being abruptly taken away at the age of 29.

“Anton Hull made deliberate choices that led to this tragedy. He consciously drove to the pub, consciously consumed alcohol in the form of lager and rum, and ultimately made the catastrophic choice to drive home while clearly unfit to do so. The fact that he filmed himself on his phone only heightened the level of danger.

“We are thankful to all the witnesses whose cooperation aided our investigation, enabling us to reconstruct the sequence of events from that tragic night and secure this conviction.

“As we approach Christmas, the public will undoubtedly hear warnings from the police, road safety advocates, and many others about the perils of drink-driving. Cases like this exemplify why we urge everyone to be aware of these risks, and we do not apologize for that.

“However, Sarah’s tragic death emphasizes that the devastating impact of drink-driving isn’t limited to the holiday season alone.

“Despite today’s sentencing, Sarah’s family continues to endure immeasurable pain. Yet, we fervently hope that awareness of what transpired will deter anyone in the future from getting behind the wheel after consuming alcohol, as it can have fatal consequences.”
