Bollocks to Splitting! Let’s Unite!

The Labour Party is busily expelling its Corbynist members. The refugees (like myself) outside now have an array of choices of organisations in which to fight the Tories. Can’t we just unite under one banner?

Esteemed academic of the left John Rees recently said on Facebook, “Now that Unite has launched its new campaign we now have four major campaigns: the CW’s Enough is Enough, the Don’t Pay Campalgn, the People’s Assembly, and now Unite.

The principle on which the PA was founded and on which it has repeatedly mobilised tens of thousands, sometimes hundreds of thousands, is that there needs to be one united movement, spanning the whole spectrum of the labour movement. to confront the Tories. That fundamental truth remains unaltered. And the more campaigns that are launched the more true it becomes.”

Not Just This Campaign – Others Too

Don’t Pay is a campaign where 100,000 of us will cancel our Direct Debits on October 1st and hopefully bring the energy companies to their knees. Today I found a very aggressive and ill-found piece doing the rounds on Facebook, this time purporting to come from the Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis:

“DO NOT refuse to pay your energy bill in October.

Below is how you can make a stand and hurt your energy supplier without getting into debt/damaging your credit rating:

1. Cancel your DD & pay for what you use each month.

2. You then need to write a letter of complaint to your energy supplier. Once that complaint had been raised, your energy supplier can’t take any debt collection work on your account, so they can’t pass your details to the credit reference agencies etc. That bill gets put on hold whilst they try to resolve your complaint….”

Da, da, da You’ve probably seen this comment before that covers this extensive process described by who knows whom. Rather irritatingly, this particular meme is said to come from Martin Lewis himself. Then you see this caveat: “Edit: the accompanying graphic contains a quote from Martin Lewis” – that is to say this entire process written that purports to come from ML when you see the graphic does not.

Splitting – the Cancer of the Left?

I’m a member of the SWP, a refugee from Labour after the biggest splitter of the left, Keir Starmer, started his pogrom against us. We have people who dislike us – the Socialist Party – and the Communist and even Anarchists and Greens all have factions from the left who in many cases were once united in the Labour Party.

Who do we face as multiple factions? One party – the Tories are a broad church, albeit run by the far right at the moment. Our squabbling is music to the ears of the opposition. Can’t we just sort things out and stop forming new factions? Could we remember that for all our individual differences, we all have one enemy?

No, I’m not suggesting we form a Dorset Pitchforks group, though the idea appeals. Dorset Socialists meet regularly – we are a broad church who welcome anyone on the left. Could we all come together and form the united front we need to take on the Tory oligarchy that blights both the county? Whatever we do, it’s time to stop forming organisations and start uniting to bring the fight to the Tories who are themselves in civil war.

In solidarity!
