Keir’s Starmer block on Jeremy Corbyn standing for Labour in the next general election has given the former Labour leader’s support in the country a huge boost, according to the producer of a controversial new film about the party
The documentary film, “Oh Jeremy Corbyn — The Big Lie”, is currently being screened across the country and Starmer’s action has had a dramatic impact on the attendance at the screenings.
Producer Norman Thomas said: “When we launched the film, it was difficult even finding one venue to screen it. But since Starmer barred Corbyn standing for Labour, the whole thing’s gone mad. Some people are getting their local cinemas to put it on, but others are organising screenings in meeting halls, churches, pubs, art galleries — everywhere you can think of. It’s currently being shown in over 100 venues across the country, with more being added every day.”
Narrated by veteran left wing comedian Alexei Sayle and with contributions from film-maker Ken Loach and ex-Labour MP Chris Williamson, the film “Oh Jeremy Corbyn — The Big Lie” tells the story of Corbyn’s rise and fall and the alleged “conspiracy of forces” which brought him down.
Mr Thomas said: “If Keir Starmer thinks he’s going to bury Jeremy Corbyn by blocking him from running for Labour, he is profoundly mistaken. In fact he’s given Jeremy’s support a huge boost. It’s not just that Keir’s made Jeremy a martyr — he’s done something people feel is deeply undemocratic. They are very, very angry.”
The film is produced by Platform Films, makers of the 1980s Channel Four series “The People’s Flag” and the anti-Iraq war film “Not In My Name”.
Mr Thomas added: “When this film was launched I thought we’d be lucky to show it in four or five venues in different parts of the country. Now, it’s being shown everywhere, a sort of general release by people power. I’ve never seen anything like it.”
Mr Thomas believes that based on the reaction the film is getting Corbyn would win if he stood against Labour as an independent candidate.
Mr Thomas said: “Based on the response we’re getting I think if Jeremy stood in his old constituency as an independent he would be swept back to power. People all over the country would come running to support him.”
Mr Thomas added: “Our film ends by asking what happened to the huge grassroots movement which supported Jeremy — a movement that almost got him into No 10 — and whether it might rise again. The reception we’re getting around the country suggests it will.”
