It’s that time of year where we all enjoy being outdoors and exploring Dorset’s spectacular countryside and green parks – a time to really look after your wellbeing.

We can still enjoy all that Dorset has to offer and make the most of being outdoors in our countryside, but there are simple steps we can take to stay safe from nasty bug bites. Read our blog on how to be tick aware whilst out and about enjoying our countryside with a simple ‘Tick Trick’.

Residents that live and visit areas near the River Stour could be exposed to Blandford Fly bites more than usual this year. The annual treatment of the river has been completed but we ask residents to be aware that more flies could be present this Summer. So, please wear clothes that cover your legs while out walking. Also wear high socks and insect repellent when walking near streams and rivers.

If you do get a fly bite, clean the bite and dry the area. You will most likely have them on your legs and ankles and have localised symptoms around the bite:

  • swelling
  • blistering
  • a high temperature of 38C (100.4F) or over
  • joint pain
  • If you get a bad reaction to the bite visit your local pharmacy or contact NHS 111 for advice on treatment.
